Spring Bulbs
I know it’s August and I am already talking about next Spring, but let me tell you why…
Bulbs are generally planted between September – November and the best varieties get snapped up quickly. Planning ahead now will mean you get what you want, and your garden will be gorgeous next Spring.
When to plant
Early spring bulbs like crocus and daffodils ideally should be planted before October.
Late spring- summer flowering bulbs such as alliums can be planted by the end of October
Tulips are best left until last and do better when planted in November, this helps to reduce the risk of diseases which will impact the performance of the tulips.
Some of my favourite bulbs to plant this autumn
If you are stuck for Spring inspiration, I have three favourites to share with you.
Tulipa ‘Angelique’ is a gorgeous ruffled variety that looks more like a peony than a tulip. It opens a creamy-pink and as it comes into it’s own it the pink develops even further. This looks great in pots and the border.
Narcissus ‘Sir Winston Churchill’ in my opinion is one of the most gorgeous scented daffodil varieties. With it’s soft creamy-white petals and yellow-apricot ruffled center, it makes a beautiful change from brighter more traditional varieties.
Allium ‘purple sensation’ are a staple in any garden. The tall architectural stems and the classic lollipop style head are easy to spot.. The pops of purple look fantastic in amongst a border, and the seed heads can be left to provide wonderful structure as the summer perennials take over.
Bulb planting tips
1. If you are planting in pots don’t forget to keep an eye on the dryness of the soil. Winter doesn’t always mean wet weather. Very dry soil will result in the bulbs producing very short stems and poor flowers.
2. When the flowers are getting going, you will inevitably get to a stage where the foliage looks a bit of a mess. The bulb regenerates energy from the leaves back into the bulb for the following year. So resist the temptation to cut it off until the foliage starts to yellow.
3. Plant the bulbs where you will see them. Early Spring can be a time where you are really craving some colour in the garden. Planting the bulbs where you can see them, near to your back door, or visible form the kitchen window will ensure you can enjoy them even when not sat outside.
I would love to know what bulbs you are ordering this year, and if you would add anything to my list.
